Jay B. Ghosh was a prolific Operations Management researcher and teacher. This site aims to highlight and advance his academic work. Our goal is to catalogue his career and contributions, and to list his collegues. In time, we will grant awards to graduate students advancing his areas of research.
Jay B. Ghosh was born in Calcutta, India in September 1955. He was the second son born to two modest school teachers. The youngest of a large group of cousins, he developed a reputation for being a good student without trying hard.
After High School, in 1971, he placed into the Kharagpur campus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology. By 1976, he finished his B.Tech with Honors in Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering. He took an executive position at Sonodyne Electronics Company, where he worked until 1979, when an opportunity to study in the United States presented itself.
In the United States, Jay joined the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville with a full scholarship. By 1980, he finished his M.Sc. in Operations Research. By the summer of 1983, he completed his Ph.D in Industrial Engineering (Operations Research, Computing & Statistics). He earned both degrees with a 4.0 GPA.
From August 1983 to August 1995, a lot changed in his life. He moved to Ohio to work at the University of Dayton's School of Business Administration. This was the most prolific research period of his life. He published a lot and quickly advanced from assistant to tenured professor. He got married, had two sons, and was a large part of the flourishing Bengali community in Ohio.
With tenure and a body of research under his belt, Jay took a more adventurous path next, accepting roles at prestigious universities around the world. In 1995, he moved to Tokyo as visiting professor at International University of Japan's School of International Management. He took a similar role at the CentER for Economic Research at Tilburg University in the Netherlands soon thereafter.
Until August 1997, he taught at Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, where he met with one of his closest colleagues, Erdel Erel. He went on to accept the Professor & Head of Operations Management & Business Statistics role at the Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman. He stayed in Oman from September 1997 to August 2001.
With sons preparing for college, he moved back to the United States. He taught at University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business from 2002 to 2005 and at Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management in 2006.
From 2007 onwards, he was Professor of Logistics, Service and Operations Management at Korea University Business School in Seoul. While in Korea, he was diagnosed with liver cancer.
He spent the next few years with his sons in California, battling cancer, continuing his work, and keeping up with old colleagues. He took breif assignments in Europe and the Middle East based on his interests and health. In October 2011, he decided to move back to Calcutta to be close to his brother, cousins, and childhood friends. He passed away in December 2011.
